A bluff is a good tool in the hands of a seasoned player but it’s a liability to the uninitiated. The rule in this lesson is simple: make sure it’s an effective and undetected poker bluffing.
When a player is obviously weak and we think of taking in the pot now we bluff slightly by making a minimum raise presently. They’ll surely call. After they do, we bluff full swing in the next betting round to take the pot. So, in a one to two dollars no limit poker (and there’s good positioning), and a player raises $15 before the flop, and everybody folds, we call. That is, we call during our turn, holding a Jack and ten diamond and hoping to hit good on the flop.
Then the flop shows: 7 hearts, 9 spades, and 2 clovers. This leads to an inside straight draw that can also end up with outs—all of which we rather not pursue. So the opponent wagers a $25 on the flop—though we have a good idea of the opponent’s poor hand. And such a flop did him no good either. So we do the lowest raise. The opponent would probably call and, if the opponent had a good hand all along, might even raise again. At which point we fold.
But poor hands just call in such a scenario. Folding is an option, but the opponent might not simply because the opponent initiated the bet. And our low raise didn’t shoo the opponent off. After calling, the flop reveals a 7 diamond. After making the first act the opponent looks perturbed and we make a big bluff—we raise to $100. The opponent refuses to call and shows his ace and Jack in surrender. We put down our hands face down, letting no one see what we have and what really just happened. We collect the pot.
A bluffed raise gives us some kind of control over the game. When we raise our opponent we take that control. When the opponent raises higher the opponent takes back that control. So, with enough courage and showmanship, staying on top of the situation makes the opponent fold in the end without knowing why except for some hunch of our hand.
Hence, bluffing is not only the effective pretension on the face or bodily gestures. Effective and undetected poker bluffing is more on the betting, calling, and raising pretensions we display.
A good poker play knows the fundamentals of effective and undetected poker bluffing techniques.
